What is the Federal Government’s Take on Weight Loss

You may be surprised what the federal government has to say about weight loss. The National Institutes of Health has some interesting ideas about what it takes to trim the fat. You may find that a number of these ideas conflict with what you’ve been hearing in the popular press.

For instance, you may have read that consuming red meat makes it more difficult for you to shed pounds. Actually, lean meat can be a critical component of a diet. While red meat, chicken, and pork may have cholesterol and saturated fat, they also have important minerals such as iron and zinc. However, when eating meat, you should try to make sure that it is low in fat. You can choose from sirloin tip, round steak, and flank steak. You should also be aware of proper portion sizes–the average portion should be the size of a billfold folded over.

You may have heard that dairy products are fattening. However, low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese have all the nutrients of whole milk products, with fewer calories and less fat. Dairy products are particularly beneficial for their calcium, protein, and vitamin D content. According to federal guidelines, children, teenagers, and senior citizens should have three servings of milk products each day, while adults age 19 to 49 should have two helpings daily. A serving would consist of a single cup of milk or yogurt, or 1 ounces of cheese. If you have trouble digesting milk products, consider lactose-free items. You may also be able to get your calcium from juice or salmon, and your vitamin D from juice or cereal.

The federal government maintains that becoming a vegetarian will not automatically make you lose weight. However, studies have indicated that vegetarians do ingest fewer calories than meat-eaters and tend to have lower body mass indexes. However, even as a vegetarian, you have to watch your intake of high-calorie food. Also, as a vegetarian you will have to find ways to ensure that you get plenty of iron, protein, calcium, and vitamin D, which might otherwise be missing from your diet. As a result, it is important that you select vegetarian entrees that are not only low-fat, but high in nutrition. For instance, spinach will give you iron, broccoli can provide calcium, milk offers vitamin D, eggs provide vitamin B12, whole grains offer zinc, and eggs give you protein.

You might have been told that you should not eat nuts if you want to shed pounds. In actuality, a small amount of nuts can be an ingredient of your weight loss plan. While nuts are, generally speaking, high in fat, the fat is considered a healthy kind that does not harm the arteries. Nuts can provide you with not only protein, but fiber and magnesium as well. But it is important that you eat nuts in moderation. This means consuming only about a third of a cup or less per day.

Federal health officials are firm on the idea that fasting is not a good way to lose weight. It is far better to eat regular meals, although you might opt for smaller meals than you might ordinarily choose eaten more frequently. Meals help to kick-start your metabolism, enabling it to thrive throughout the day.

If you are skeptical about a particular weight loss claim, you can check the Federal Trade Commission’s website at www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/features/wgtloss.htm for the information you need. Also, you might benefit from discussing your concerns with a registered dietician. In order to locate one in your geographical area, log onto the American Dietetic Association website at www.eatright.org/Public/PublicDieticianDisclaimerAdvanced.htm.

Does the federal government have all the answers when it comes to weight loss? Perhaps not. But it is clear that the feds have a great deal of research to back up their claims. Therefore, you should carefully consider the nutritional information that comes from federal sources. The federal government is interested in having a healthy populace; it has nothing to gain by promoting specific weight loss programs. Therefore, you can be sure that the information that you are getting from federal health authorities is information you can trust. And it could make a great deal of difference, as far as your personal weight is concerned.

Serious runners and walkers eventually turn to treadmill workouts so that they can exercise safely and conveniently at any time of day or night in their own homes. Fitness experts agree that one of the best ways to get in shape and stay that way is by running or walking every day, but the reality is that it isn’t always safe or practical to do so on “the open road.” If your free time is in the early morning or late at night, or your route is by a roadway where there is heavy or high-speed traffic, your most important goal may become getting home alive, which misses the point of the whole thing. Also, it isn’t fun or sensible to run in the snow, sleet, hail, rain, or the blazing sun. A treadmill workout is the answer to all these problems.

There are health clubs and gyms that offer treadmill workouts to their clients, but you may have decided that you don’t like the hours offered by the club or gym near you, or the locations are not convenient, or you prefer not to have an audience when you work out. Whatever drives you to it, if you are concerned about health and fitness, you will eventually buy a treadmill for home use, and you should make sure you are getting a good piece of equipment at a reasonable price. It is also important to select a model with features that you will use and enjoy:

• If you have limited room in your home or apartment, you will be happiest with a fold-up machine that can be stored out of the way in a closet or under the bed.

• If money is not a concern, you can combine fitness and entertainment by choosing a treadmill with a built-in television and speakers; or you may be happy with an inexpensive manual machine, which you can position in front of the TV.

• There are treadmills with controls that monitor speed, pace, incline, time, distance traveled, calories burned, and with heart rate controls and pulse sensors.

• Many models have built-in racks and nests to hold reading material, a water bottle, a CD player or a cell phone, and a towel.

• If you would like sophisticated gadgetry on a treadmill but the cost is prohibitive, you should check out the used treadmills and the discount treadmills, which may offer what you want at a price you can afford.

A Variety of Treadmill Workouts are Available

• There are treadmills that include workout CDs with energizing music and workout videos with spectacular scenery to create the illusion that you are outdoors, or you can buy these separately. (And if you want fresh air to go with it, you can open a window.)

• Some treadmills have pre-set programs, such as interspersing flat surface workouts with inclines, or by varying speeds. Some programs are designed for weight loss and some for cardio fitness, and all will have different levels of intensity. There are programs that vary the speed and force of the workout to keep your heart rate within a pre-selected zone.

• On some machines, you can design a personal program for yourself, and, of course, all treadmills allow the user to change the speed or incline during the workout, usually at the push of a button.

Treadmill Workouts Keep You Motivated

• ProForm – Some models of ProForm treadmills come with interactive workout disks that include music, incline and speed controls, and recorded advice by personal trainers to encourage you to monitor and gradually improve your cardiovascular fitness.

• Precor – Precor treadmills have a patented system to absorb the shock of impact, have cool and quiet motors, and a quick start feature. These quality machines also specialize in providing a variety of programs to challenge and motivate you (anywhere from five to eighteen programs, depending on the model). You can be sure of finding a program that is perfect for you, and you can change to another when you are ready to move on.

• Spirit – Spirit treadmills are the best fold-up machines on the market and they also have preset programs that adjust the speed and incline according to your heart rate, or you can customize a program.

It is important to vary your programs in order to motivate yourself to improve your conditioning, or to increase your body strength, or to help you with weight loss or weight maintenance:

• Try walking backwards on the machine at an easy pace.

• Walk at various speeds with mirrors in front and beside you to check your style, posture, technique, etc.

• Begin by walking or running for five minutes, and then step off the treadmill and do one minute of crunches, push-ups, lunges, and any other exercises that appeal to you, and then back on again and repeat until you have exercised for your usual length of time.

• After walking or running for ten minutes, step off and do ten minutes of stretching or weight training and then back on again, and repeat as desired.

• Light some candles, burn some incense and turn on spa music to walk off your stress.

• Walk or run in the nude (make sure the curtains are closed).

In fact, anything you can think of that adds variety to your workout and keeps you interested is worth trying.

Information about brands, models, and features of individual machines, as well as comparisons of various models are available online by consulting treadmill reviews and information on the Internet. Remember that online retailers don’t have the storefront expenses that are standard for most sports equipment outlets, and so they are able to offer you, the customer, brand name machines, both new and used, at big savings. Make sure there is a warranty of some kind in place if you buy a used, discount, or factory refurbished treadmill. Same-day shipping is sometimes offered, or shipping within three to five days, and sometimes the cost is included in the price.

There are countless benefits to be gained by engaging in daily treadmill workouts. You will increase your bone density, your endurance, your cardio fitness, and your general health. Exercising is psychologically rewarding because it increases your feelings of accomplishment and well being, and, therefore, is good for your mental health. The investment in a treadmill offers big rewards. Let us help you find what you need and start you on the road to improved physical and mental health. You will be happy with the results.

As you grow older, not only do you grow wiser but as a sign of wisdom, you start losing your hair. Thin hair has been the result of time. But other factors like heredity, modern hair styling treatments like perming, bleaching, coloring etc. have also led to thin hair. Bad diets and stress also have an adverse effect on the thickness of hair.

The following tips give you some advice on how to control hair thinning problems:

* Color your hair: When you color your hair, they appear thicker since the process actually roughs up the hair. It is easier to give the appearance of fullness since the hair strands slide one another and lie flat against each other. Use lighter colors since they hide the scalp very easily.

* Choose a curly look: When you curl your hair, they appear fuller since the wavy look alters the surface of the hair.

* Blow-dry your hair: Blow drying the hair will make the hair two to three times thicker without harming the scalp. It plumps up the hair so that they look higher. But keep the dryer two to three times away from the hair to avoid causing excessive dryness. Also, use a conditioner after shampoo if you tend to blow dry your hair regularly.

* Use protein shampoo daily: When you wash your hair daily, the hair oils are removed, it gives the hair more body so that it looks thicker than the normal. Using shampoos with hydrolyzed animal proteins, also called thickeners, they give the hair more diameter. They coat the hair so that each shaft appears two to three times fuller than usual. Also, the hair appears fluffy and hence, looks fuller.

* Try a kitchen conditioner: Mix a tablespoon of white vinegar with a pint of water and massage onto the hair after shampooing. Vinegar changes the chemical balance of the hair to acidic and thus gives a full appearance to thinning hair.

* Use eggs: Crack an egg over the hair before shampooing. Massage it for five minutes and then rinse out. It has the same effect as protein shampoos as egg is an animal protein.

* Use minimal commercial conditioners: Usually, conditioners are used to give the volume to the hair. But people use quantities more than required and thus give the hair a limp look. Always use a teaspoon of conditioner for every wash.

* Use mousse: before going out, always style your hair with mousse to make the hair appear fuller. Since mousse contains resins, they coat the hair and add diameter to it. It lifts the hair off the scalp and gives it a fuller appearance.

Making one’s face look younger is everyone’s dream. There are people who resort to different methods – even the most expensive ones – just so they’d get that “look young, feel young” atmosphere. But to those who can barely afford it, the “attempt” is considered a vice. Most of the time, you’d hear from these people the line, “Why would you interfere with nature’s course?”

But those who want to preserve the youth as they add up years would say, “Why not age with grace?” Yes, why not? You may think it is too late to do so especially if you were once abusive of your body (e.g., too much sun-bathing, etc.) when you were younger. Most of the time, it is the reason why people acquire the old-age look (even before they get to that stage) since the body was not well taken cared of.

The tell-tale signs of old age are the sunken hollows of the cheeks and around the eyes, sagging of the chin, wrinkles on the forehead, the “rumpled” and the total haggard look. But there’s always hope. The moment you realize you need to take care of your health is never too late a time to do so–whether you are 30 or 60.

It’s been proven that rejuvenation of the face through friction and massage are the best ways to look young and feel young. Realize that the main reason your facial muscles sag is lack of muscular exercise. Like any other muscle of the body, constant exercise can make these facial muscles expand and develop, effectively removing the sagging look. Wrinkled skin, on the other hand, has been proven to be made elastic again through regular application of friction.

This does not only apply to women who are known to be vain in nature but for the men as well.

How is applying friction on the skin done? With the help of some lotion to minimize irritation (not too much lotion, though, as there will be no more friction), work on the areas which normally result to sagging, such as the cheeks, the throat, the chin, the forehead and around the eyes. Start as though you are polishing a pair of shoes: with a slight, circular friction on the surface areas, which should gradually increase in pressure but not too vigorous that you will end up abrading and irritating your face. This process will progressively restore the elasticity of your skin and smoothen out the wrinkles.

To exercise your facial muscles, use your palm heel. With enough pressure, massage your cheeks and other parts of the face in circular motion. This process will build up the muscles and fill those “hollows”, those sunken areas around the eyes and the cheeks. Do this also on the chin and throat. Make sure you apply equal amount of pressure to the entire face so that the build up of muscles will be uniform.

Do these exercises a few minutes everyday–even while you are watching the TV– and you will soon see the “miracle” of a younger looking you.

The process of looking older does not have to be as fast as it is now. With the right determination, and knowing the proper techniques, you can almost stop the advance of the “aged” look, no matter that your actual age is unstoppably moving ahead. It’s been proven possible and there’s no reason you can’t achieve the same.

Tumbling on the trampoline caught on like wildfire in the
early 1960s, and still enjoys great popularity today, but
the sport also still involves the same potential dangers.
Trampolines in the last 45 years have gone from being an
institutional or recreation center piece of equipment, to
something that is found in many homes, in a variety of
sizes and quality.

From a simple, round trampoline of relatively small
dimensions, to the large, outdoor models sold for family
fun, every trampoline represents the possibility of injury,
if not used properly, or if used by those not experienced
in tumbling or acrobatics.

Here are some simple tips to make your sure that you enjoy
the fun of a trampoline, while eliminating many of the
risks.

* Placement

Never set up even a small, exercise trampoline indoors
where there is a risk of hitting light fixtures or the
ceiling. Outdoors, place trampolines well away from
clotheslines, tree limbs, fences, outdoor furniture, and
other objects that can cause injury when someone falls off.

If at all possible, secure your trampoline by setting its
legs/supports down into the ground, thereby reducing the
distance of a fall. At the same time, it’s advisable to
provide padding to a depth of 10″ or more, for at least 10′
around the trampoline.

* Clothing

Anyone using the trampoline should wear clothing loose
enough to allow freedom of movement, but not the chance
that limbs could become entangled in extra folds. Jewelry
should be removed before getting on, as should the contents
of any pockets, and eyeglasses that are not secured by a
headband. If you do not have trampoline footwear, then bare
feet are best, as socks can cause you to slip.

* Training and Supervision

No child or adult, should be allowed to attempt complicated
tumbling such as summersaults, when they have not had
adequate training. Incorrect landing positions can cause
serious and disabling injuries. Supervision should be
provided for everyone who is learning to use a trampoline
for the first time.

Ideally, there should be someone on hand who can instruct
them in simple maneuvers, and who is also versed in first
aid for injuries. Alternately, it may benefit everyone, to
join a gym for a class in proper trampoline use, including
mounts and dismounts.

* One At a Time

The chance of injury soars when more than one person gets
on a trampoline at the same time. This can be the result of
collisions, or upsetting another person’s balance, causing
them to fall. Unless you are a trained “spotter”, all
others waiting a turn, should stand away from the
trampoline while someone else is using it.

Welcome to Weight-Loss Secrets. This article series is going to consist of common sense conclusions that can be derived from current research and generally accepted facts.

I won’t waste your time like the scientists that took 2 years to determine that eating fast food makes you fat (duuuh). At times you may find a lot of these topics VERY theoretical but since I dont have millions to dump into proving the obvious we’ll just have to act ahead of science and wait for the studies to catch up to common sense 20 years from now.

Want a sample of these common sense health conclusions?

Sure you do……

COMMON-SENSE CONCLUSION: Eat 3 Meals get Fat FAST! ———————————————————– 3 meals sounds logical. You’ve heard it all your life. Hell, you’ve eaten 3 square meals all your life. But Why!?

Bet you’ve never really given it any thought have you? Whats more natural than bacon, eggs and sausage with some flapjacks in the morning? A hamburger for lunch and a nice steak for dinner?

That doesnt sound sooooo… bad does it?

Except for the fact that it’s the exact opposite of YOUR nature!!

Think about it. Humans have been around for millions of years (or 6,000 depending on your religious beliefs) and for the majority of that existence it required you to catch your own dinner or you wouldn’t eat.

Think about that for 1 second and the natural eating plan starts to become clear. If you were a caveman you would get up in the morning and prepare to hunt for todays dinner. Meat was planned to be that evenings feast.

Meat wasnt there for breakfast or lunch and dinner was a real maybe. Until the lucky hunter caught meat he ate things that were a lot easier to catch – fruits and vegetables!

So a typical day would have the hunter rising and eating nuts, berries, veggies or fruit (slow-release carbs that provide continuous energy for the hunt).

During the day the hunter could turn to these same items to stave off hunger and keep him fueled for the fight without making him sleepy.

An end of day successful hunt would provide meat and a feast!

And so it basically went for millions of years….

Can you imagine teleporting a caveman raised like that to present day America and letting him eat at your table? What do you think would happen to him when fed your diet of non-stop meat and between meal snacks? Of course he’d get fat as a pig!

We’ll the jokes on you. You are that caveman. Your genes and his share over 99% of the same DNA. You body reacts just like his would in todays toxic environment.

If I was a caveman you’d better believe that I wouldn’t be getting up 3 times a day and chasing down some animal just because its time to eat. My family line probably discovered that plants were edible.

I know I would have. When cavewife tried to get me up for the breakfast hunt I’d have snatched the nearest plant ate it, took a couple chews, taste it. Ummmmm, tastes good. I’m not sick. Here baby, eat this and give some to the kids. Wake me up for the next hunt….

See? It doesnt make sense. It really seems natural that we would only have to hunt and eat meat once a day and really the body is probably adapted to comfortably going without meat for days at a time.

Evolution hasnt adapted us to live in todays food world and probably wont for another couple million years.

The answer is to eat more like our genetic ancestors if we want improved weight control energy and health.

Heart disease is the #1 killer – 98%+ of those deaths can be attributed to plaque buildups that cause blockages leading to heart attack and stroke. – You were born with clean arteries how did they get so blocked?

Maybe it has something to do with the food we eat. Which raises another point. In the early 1900’s a doctor could go his entire career and never see a heart attack.

Huh! Well, what’s so different today? Could processed and fast-food have anything to do with it? Hmmm…..

America on verge of obesity epidemic – Heart blockages #1 killer

Hmmmmmmm………

Think there’s a link?

Could it be that we’re eating too much meat with saturated fat that’s clogging our arteries and leading to heart disease and stroke?

Especially when you consider that primitive man (you) wasn’t built to processed massive amounts of meat and chemicals that dont exist in nature.

Seems logical, it just hasnt been studied and proven yet.

I have decided not to wait for the study (and the possibility of becoming a fatal statistic) and draw logical conclusions and take pro-health action.

I have seen the positive results of these steps in my own life and this blog is my way to share these findings with you.

Common sense science you can live with.

In my next article I’ll show you how I easily work this tidbit of info into my daily life. Follow natures plan and you can practically eat all day to keep your energy up and avoid hunger without having to do anything weird like count calories, carbs or fat grams.

In the future I’ll share other health vanity issues like how to eliminate/reduce puffy eyes, EZ exercise programs and more.

Stay-tuned…

As time rolls on the human body does not keep up as it used to, and to be able to enjoy life into the golden years, steps need to be taken to help the body remain in the best possible shape. Studies have revealed that EFA’s (essential fatty acids) such as those in Flax seed can provide great benefits. So what are some of the health benefits of flax seed?

One of the first health benefits of flax seed it its ability to provide protection to the human body. Lower cholesterol, lowering chances for cancer, as well as strengthening the body’s immune system are just some of the health benefits of flax seed. Other benefits provided are the natural lowering of blood pressure, assistance in the healing of bruises and sprains, and can actually help control some types of diabetes.

Another health benefit of flax seed is for the overall health and well being of its users. As we get older, we cannot seem to get around or do as much as we could in our younger days. Studies have shown that flax seed can help regain stamina after exertion, help the body loose weight and findings show that it can also help improve eyesight and color perception.

The absorption of calcium is a major concern for the older generation, with the risk of osteoporosis, and another health benefit of flax seed s that it helps the body maximize calcium absorption. Stronger bones, and stronger and healthier finger and toe nails can be seen in the daily user.

Growing old has a way to affect the mind and some health benefits of flax seed can help offset this. From helping to improve memory to treating some signs of depression, flax seed can give back what time has damaged. Rather than drugs that might have severe side effects, flax seed can provide these benefits naturally.

The health benefits of flax seed in the young cannot be overstated, as they can benefit from the daily use of flax to clear a path of good health for years to come.

The brain is a very soft and a delicate organ. However, the protection offered by the head to the brain is limited and a hard and sudden blow to the head can result in injury to the brain of the spinal cord, not apparent through any visible signs on the head or the face. This is the reason why all head injuries are considered to be serious unless certified otherwise.

Head injuries are of two kinds – Open and Closed. Open head injuries, are apparent head injuries with bleeding or marks on the face or the skull. Closed head injuries are injuries that have no signs of injury externally. Open head injuries being apparent can be taken care of with medical help. Closed head injuries are more serious in nature since it is difficult to gauge the cause, scale or area of injury on the face of it.

The brain is a soft and jelly-like organ protected by the skull. This jelly like organ floats inside the skull in a nourishing liquid also called the cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid not only nourished the brain but also acts as a shock absorber. However, the protection extended by this liquid is limited to small knock san jars. A hard impact can injure the brain by smashing it against the insides of the skull, bruising it or tearing important blood vessels. If the blood vessels are torn or ruptures the brain would then begin to leak blood and serum, leading to an increase in pressure inside the skull. Since the skull has only so much volume, this increase in intracranial pressure can result in permanent damage to the brain by crushing.

How to judge and handle a head injury

Professional medical care is always recommended for a head injury, but there could be some first aid that can be administered.

Blood can never be the reliable indicator of a head injury. Wounds can be superficial, but the seriousness of a head injury can be judged by -

- Consciousness: A person afflicted by a head injury may become unconscious or may remain in a conscious state but become drowsy or confused. Check the injured for breathing and turn to one side without disturbing the neck and the head are too much. If the injured is not breathing, check for the pulse. If the pulse is positive try giving mouth to mouth resuscitation at one every four seconds by pinching the injured’s nose. In case of no pulse try cardiac compression and alternate with mouth to mouth resuscitation.

- Skull deformities: A deformed skull either compressed or swollen are signs of a fracture.

- Clear fluid leak: Leaking of clear fluid from the ears or nose is a symptom that the skull has been fractured most probably at the base. Gently cover or pad the ear and turn the injured to the affected side. In case of bleeding try and control it by applying pressure to the wound.

- Black eyes or skin bruises: These symptoms indicate blood vessel rupture around the eyes and ears.

- Vision changes: Dilation of pupils of the eyes indicates a serious head injury and can result in blurred or double vision.

- Nausea: The most common side effect of head injury is nausea and vomiting. Make sure the airway to the injured is clear and he is breathing.

Lately, you pee a lot. You always feel thirsty and you always feel hungry. You always feel tired. Your vision blurs most of the time. Your wounds heal longer that it used to. If these things are happening to you, now is the time to worry. You might have diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease characterized by high level of blood sugar. This is due to faulty insulin production, insulin action, or both. Diabetes can lead to serious complications then eventually to premature death if not controlled correctly. So to better prevent diabetes or treat it if you already have diabetes, equip yourself with the ins and outs of the sickness.

There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. In both types, early detection and early treatment will reduce the chances of developing serious health problems.

Type 1 diabetes was formerly known as juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Type 1 diabetes matures quickly and symptoms are very visible. This type of diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system destroys pancreatic cells. These cells are the insulin producing cells. This type of diabetes affects mostly children and young adults. Risk factors for type 1 diabetes include autoimmune, genetics, and environmental factors.

The exact cause of this form of diabetes is still unknown but it is believed that this is triggered by a virus or an allergen which stimulates the immune system of the baby, kid or young adult to attack the beta cells in the pancreas.

Type 1 diabetes symptoms include fatigue, recurrent urination, thirst, weight loss, sweet smelling breath and difficulty in breathing. If type 1 diabetes is left undiagnosed and untreated, this will lead to labored breathing, coma, and death.

Type 2 diabetes was used to be called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes. This form of diabetes develops slowly and the symptoms are usually less severe than people with type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes begins as insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a disorder in which the cells do not use insulin properly. As the need for insulin rises, the pancreas loses its ability to produce insulin.

Recent studies have shown that genetics, fetal history, obesity, lack of physical activity, diet high in fat, and stress may influence in the development of this form of diabetes. Also, genetic studies have shown that association of some genes is in fact the cause of Type 2 diabetes.

Now on to the most important question – is it treatable?

There is still no cure for diabetes but it can be managed. Some of the ways to manage diabetes is through injection of insulin in the body, careful meal planning, blood glucose monitoring, and exercise.

There are some recent medical breakthroughs that may help in the curing of diabetes. One is the transplantation of beta cells (the insulin producing cells) which has been successful although with some side effects. Another treatment is the pancreas transplantation. This is not recommended treatment for diabetes unless there is a need for a kidney transplant as well. Another approach is the genetic manipulation although this is still under study. In this particular treatment, insulin genes are inserted to cells that are not producing insulin to make them produce insulin.
